Hall Sweeps

At my high school the administrators started a new policy this year where everyonce in a while they do a hall sweep. Hall sweeps occur right after class has started (after the tardy bell). During a hall sweep, anyone who is still in the hall (late/tardy to class) goes to get lunch detention and a slip to let him/her into class.
Today at lunch I got caught in one of these. Right when it was time to head back to school after eating lunch I got a bloody nose. Of course I was late because I had to wait for my nose to stop bleeding. I went back to school, walked into class and the sbustitute teacher (I guess the real teacher was away, I really don’t know) asks me for my yellow slip. I didn’t have one and hearing yellow slip I knew a hall sweep had happened. I left the room and came home for various reasons which I’ll go over later. I had actually wanted to go to class today.
I’m don’t want lunch detetion because I had a bloody nose. I couldn’t control that. I probably could have told them thats why I was late and not have get lunch detention but I don’t like making excuses.
Like today if I have a legit reason for being late, I don’t want to get lunch detention. The other times I am late it is usually because I don’t want to go to class so I hang out in the hall. If a hall sweep is done at these times, its just an excuse for me to ditch class. If there wasn’t a hall sweep, I most likely would go to class, I’d be late but atleast I would be in class.
With hall sweeps, instead of being a couple minutes late, you have to go get a slip to get into class which makes to 10+ minutes late. In most of my classes, nothing is done in the first couple of minutes because the teacher is taking roll or getting things ready. The administrators are forcing me to miss even more class time than I normally would.
There is already a policy in place where if you get four for more tardies, you get a “U” in citizenship which needs to be made up before you can graduate. Teachers also already do bell quizzes and other things like that which you can only take if you are on time. There are plenty of ways to “punish” students who are late. In my opinion, the hall sweeps are an excuse to sluff.

Hello Eric,
I stumbled onto your site from phpBB.com. I just graduated from high school last year. I’ve experienced stories like this before and now I look back and just shake my head at how inane they were. Hang in there, you’re almost done! Take care and good luck with the rest of the year!

Citizenship @_@
Is that some sort of compulsory brainwashing class??? j/k
Sometimes schools do stupid things, but you just have to put up with it, or complain.

Citizenship isn’t a class. Each of your teachers grade you on how you act in class. “H” for honor (the highest), “G” for good, “S” for satisfactory, “N” for needs improvement, “U” for unsatisfactory (the lowest). It doesn’t count for anything except you have to make up “U”s in order to graduate.

Thats just silly.
At my school we had an estimate made by our teachers of our aptitude, but it didn’t mean anything. Not that hard to score all A’s in that criteria.

I am doing a project on Hall Sweeps because i too have them in my school. I think its a rediculous policy and should be taken out of schools so my goal with this project is to get them to find an alternative policy for the “attendance issue”. I definetly agree with you, its a stupid policy!

I’m supposed to go get a pass if I’m late to class too.
Our teachers seem to realize that that takes more class time though, only one of my teachers asks for the slip.
Our dean likes to walk around after the bell rings and say something like: “The be there bell done rung!”
You could just go to class, there’s probably someone to talk to in there
