A couple weeks ago I was in London for phpBB’s Londonvasion (software conference) where this picture was taken:

I’m the bald one on the right side. I’m not really bald but the combination of the hotel not providing any shampoo and the roots of my natural blond hair makes it look like I am. Now I know what I’ll look like in a few years when I’ve lost some of my hair. The back of my head will still be as sexy as ever.

The past week has been extremely busy for me. After getting back from London this past weekend for phpBB’s Londonvasion I got slammed at work with lots of projects to work on. Not only am I dead tired from jet lag but work is wearing me out. I’m finally starting to recover. I have a couple items I’ve wanted to blog about but that will have to wait until I actually have some time. Can someone clone me? You can kill it when I’m done with it. I promise I won’t tell the cops that you killed me.

MODs Manager AKA Blinky AKA EasyMOD for phpBB3

Part of phpBB switching over to SVN for version control a code forge was created. Recently we moved MODs Manager (code name blinky) to this public repository so people can follow progress of it.

Blinky is an automatic modification installer for phpBB3. Some of you may be familiar with EasyMOD which is an automatic modification installer for phpBB2. Blinky aims to be better than EasyMOD and work on phpBB3. We plan on adding a number of new features including an uninstaller and being able to browse external databases from within Blinky.

I’ll provide more updates as they happen but in the mean time, subscribe to the commits mailing list.

phpBB3 Release Date Announced!

Finally! The phpBB teams have announced that phpBB3 will be released on 13th December 2007, 17:00 GMT (10:00 AM MST). All of us have been waiting years for this date and it’s finally here! Yay! Party! Hehe. Be sure to grab your copy of phpBB3 on gold release and check it out. You can also grab the latest RC if you want to try it out a couple days early. There will be an easy way to upgrade your board to the gold release version.

phpBB Anniversary

I just remembered today that my anniversary of being invited to the phpBB Modifications team is on the 20th of September. I was invited in 2003 so this will be the start of my fifth year on the team.

It has gone by very fast and I have learned a lot. I’m glad and excited to still be a part of phpBB. I love it!

phpBB Weekly

I was in my first podcast this past Friday. Douglas (webmacster87 or Fountain of Apples) invited me to be on his podcast phpBB Weekly. I was meaning to post a blog about this before the show so that people could join us during the recording and ask questions. No one asked questions so it wasn’t as good as I was hoping but it was good. There is still some useful information about MODifications. Most of it is basic though.

Photos, EasyMOD, phpBB, World of Warcraft, and probably some other things

At school I am taking a photography class which I have been scanning and uploading the pictures I have taken, developed, and printed in class. You can find those pictures here. I have different assignments like shutter speed, depth of field and things like that. Go ahead and comment on any of the pictures here. I should look into getting a picture album plugin or something like that for my blog.

Soon there will be a new relese of EasyMOD. No, this won’t be a release of the rewrite but a bug/feature release of the current codebase. We’ve had these new features committed in CVS for a while now and we decided to clean up some bugs and implement a couple new features to coincide with the release of phpBB 2.0.18 (which has been released and you should update immediately if you haven’t already!). A quick note about the rewrite, that is going along smoothly. Should be moving to a public CVS server soon so everyone can follow our progress

Recently we, the phpBB MOD Team, were looking for new members. We have added Fountain of Apples as a validator to help out in the queue and MennoniteHobbit to help moderate the MOD forums and give support.

My cousin got World of Warcraft. It wouldn’t run on his computer (video card problems) so he brought it to my house so he could try it out. Since he can’t play it, he is letting me use his account. So far it has been a really fun game. I have enjoyed it and I am now addicted. If anyone has it, leave a comment or contact me in some way and we can play together.

Why we use the MOD Template

While browsing a message board, I came across a couple of posts about the phpBB MOD Template. The person who said these things obviously has never worked with a userbase as large and with a skill range as wide as phpBB’s.

the developers of phpBB are obviously Windows noobs – else their promotion of that MODs (diff for idiots) couldn’t be explained

The MOD Template isn’t for us to use, it is for the users. I’ll explain more further down.

I should probably be amused by phpBBs so called “MODs”. But really, I couldn’t imagine why anybody would want to hand-patch a portal script, if a patch is so much easier to apply – and it was quite irritating to see them recommend this stange MOD scheme over and over again.

We have the MOD Template so that the “Windows n00bs” can install MODs. These users, as you know, don’t understand diff files and how to apply patches. We provide and require users to use the MOD Template because of this. This template makes it easy to read and understand how to install a MOD which anyone can do.

I, personally, would not like to provide support on how to apply patches and how to read diff files. That would be a nightmare.
